My name is Hillary Hayes.
I'm 20 years old and I'm from a small town in northern Georgia called Fort Oglethorpe. I consider myself to be rather nomadic. I spent the vast majority of my childhood and adolescence moving from house to house, then as I grew older we moved from state to state. I get asked if I am an "Army brat" a lot. Truth is, my father is a CFO and we would just move around as he continued to acquire better job offers. I think my total is up to four states and 16 different houses now. But I do hold other hobbies other than moving around the country. After I graduated highschool I moved to Oklahoma, where I would eventually take my first, and only, skydiving jump. I jumped out alone, all by myself. I consider that to be one of more prouder moments in my life mainly because my brother was so impressed. Currently I am remodeling a 100+ year old house with my boyfriend. It's quite the headache with never-ending issues but it's also an adventure and I'm looking forward to the finished product. I plan on moving to, and adopting from, Africa at some point in my life. Africa has always been a huge passion of mine. I've even attempted to learn Swahili in the past. But adoption and the kids there are my main focus point. I intend on adopting brothers one day. Despite whatever situation I may be in, that will happen at some point.
I came to love the education field because I took a required internship class at my last high school. I chose to intern with a middle school special ed class only because the teacher was friends with my sister and I figured it would be an easy A. I turned out to love it and the kids. Every day I got to work with kids that genuinely enjoy your company and want to hear what you have to say...most of the time. I believe I have the patience and understanding to deal with the situations that are inevitable when handling kids with special needs and I can't wait to get my degree so I can have my own classroom and my own students.
Randy Pausch on Time Management
Pausch discussed his views and opinions on how to deal with time management. I agree with his discussion in that he said, "If you have to eat a frog, don't spend a lot of time looking at it...and if you have to eat three, don't eat the small one first." I took this to mean that if you have a lot on your plate, or just something you don't want to do, just do it and get it done so it's not something you have to dwell on doing anymore. Another discussion he mentioned was doing the right things, not doing things right. He said, "It's much better to do the right things adequately than to do the wrong things beautifully." In this, he's saying to focus on what's going to benfit you best and do them to the best of your ability.
After reading your post, I have come to the conclusion that while you finished the first two parts of the assignment, there were some things you could have done better. Good job making it one post, bolding your headers, and creating appropriate line breaks. Also, you definitely fulfilled the requirement of writing two or more paragraphs about yourself. They were interesting and very informative, but you forgot to mention how or why you ended up here at South. As for your summary of what you learned from Randy Pausch's Time Management video, you more so explain what he meant than what you got from it personally. You clearly identified the source you are talking about in your header, and it's clear as to what you're talking about. Your spelling was correct as far as I can see, but you did make some grammar mistakes. There were several run-on sentences and one point where you forgot a word, so be sure to proofread. Overall, I think you completed the assignment well, and it's well written in terms of organization and coherency. The only other thing I noticed is that you didn't mention anything about Randy Pausch himself, which was listed as part of the assignment.

ReplyDeleteOver all, I feel that you did well on your first blog assignment. You completed two paragraphs about yourself, your titles were made bold, page breaks were correct, and you submitted this assignment on time. Which we are learning is very important during this course, so keep it up! The critique I have for you is to watch excessive periods (i.e. '....'). Dr Strange keeps stressing to be professional and that the world is watching us so our grammar and punctuation must be in tip-top shape! You did not complete the optional part of the assignment, however I strongly encourage you to do it even if it is not required. Because we will be professionals one day, we must start now by over achieving.
